Weekend at Charlie's

Images of Weekend at Charlie's. Curated by Curatorial Studies, 2018-2019, February 2019, Vandenhove Centre for Architecture and Art, Ghent

Weekend at Charlie’s is a group exhibition that departures from the art collection of Belgian architect Charles Vandenhove and his wife, Jeanne Vandenhove. Reflecting years of passionate art collecting, the heterogeneous group of works gathered by the Vandenhoves varies in terms of style and medium. It contains a significant number of works by artists with whom Vandenhove collaborated in his architectural practice.

Considering the richness and diversity of the works on the collection, the Curatorial Studies 2018-2019 group approached the collection through seven different ensembles. Having selected several works from the Vandenhove collection and complemented them with additional works from other artists and institutions, this exhibition sought to draw constellations from the works once picked by Charles and Jeanne Vandenhove.

The exhibition explores angles as diverse as: the tension between fine and applied arts within the notion of décor; the artwork as a conversation piece; hands and gestures as a recurring motif; ruins and traces of destruction; the seriality and repetition in patterns and protocols; artworks as they activate the space; and painting as possible scores for performance. Brought together in one show, these ensembles allow for multiple readings reflecting some of the themes that figure the broad scope of the collection.

The VANDENHOVE Centre for Architecture and Art was designed by Charles Vandenhove (1927-2019) to host shows with the collection and to foster research via exhibitions. As the first display of his collection after the architect’s passing in January 2019, this exhibition is a sincere testimony to his life and work in architecture and art, as well as to his generous donations to the University of Ghent.
