SENSITIVE SURFACES | SKIN | WALL | IMAGE brings a selection of works where the surface appears as problematized tissue, as a critical possibility and as a place of investigation, dear to the practice of Brazilian contemporary artists. The frequent and moralizing use of the word superficial - which disqualifies a person or a thing supposedly devoid of values - testifies to the privilege attributed to the profound. Indeed, we tend to oppose superficial and profound in the same terms in which we oppose inside and outside, high and low. Nietzsche, however, shuffles these pairs of opposition. In his praise of ancient Greece, the philosopher claims: they were "superficial - by depth!". To restore sensitivity to surfaces is to extend to the world what Paul Valèry had already perceived in man: that the deepest is the skin.

Since the exhibition's title, we have sought to shift the privilege historically granted to what is found in the depths. The skin is our largest organ, and almost all human contact is made through its mediation. Walls house the bodies, delimitating interdictions by its extensions, communicating, and separating different types of spaces. In its turn, image inhabits the world in such a way that we either cross them or get blocked by them. The skin, the wall, and the images emerge as paradigmatic areas of the world's topology. Invested by the eyes of the artists participating in this show, these areas of friction/penetration, of topical materiality, are again perceived, no longer as invisible fragments of everyday life, but as privileged focuses of attention. We invite the audience to go through the exhibition without haste, dwelling on its reliefs, folds, and fissures.

SUPERFÍCIES SENSÍVEIS | PELE | MURO | IMAGEM traz ao público da Caixa Cultural uma seleção de trabalhos onde a problemática da superfície aparece como potência, possibilidade crítica, estética e como um lugar de investigação caro à arte contemporânea brasileira. O uso corriqueiro e moralizante do adjetivo “superficial” -- que desqualifica uma pessoa ou coisa supostamente desprovida de valores -- testemunha o privilégio correntemente atribuído ao profundo. Se tendemos a opor o superficial e o profundo nos mesmos termos em que opomos o dentro e o fora, o alto e o baixo, Nietzsche, ao elogiar os gregos, embaralha os pares desta oposição afirmando que eles eram “superficiais - por profundidade!”. Restituir a sensibilidade às superfícies é estender ao mundo o que Paul Valèry já havia percebido no humano: que o que há de mais profundo é a pele.
Desde o título da exposição, buscamos deslocar o privilégio concedido historicamente ao que se encontra na profundidade do mundo. A pele é nosso maior órgão e quase todo contato humano é realizado com sua mediação; o muro abriga os corpos, delimita interditos por força de sua extensão, comunica e separa diferentes tipos de espaços; a imagem, por sua vez, habita o mundo de tal modo que ora as atravessamos, ora somos barrados por elas. A pele, o muro e a imagem despontam como áreas paradigmáticas na atual reconfiguração da topologia do mundo. Investidas pelo olhar dos artistas, essas zonas de atrito/penetração, de materialidade tópica, voltam a ser percebidas, não mais como fragmentos invisíveis do cotidiano, mas como focos privilegiados de nossa atenção. Convidamos o público a percorrer a exposição sem pressa, detendo-se sobre seus relevos, dobras e fissuras.
